What are "Foil Sports"?

"Foil Sports" refers to a wide variety of water activities that use hydrofoils. These hydrofoils resemble underwater airplanes, lifting the watercraft and propelling the rider above the surface of the water. Giving riders the thrilling sensation of flight, hydrofoil watercraft are extremely efficient, creating minimal drag as they glide through the water at high speeds, all while avoiding surface chop and requiring minimal power for propulsion.

Although hydrofoil technology was first introduced many decades ago, it is only now becoming of age and being applied in a wide and ever expanding spectrum of water sports. Watercraft equipped with foils can be powered by motor (electric or gas motor), muscle (peddle, paddle, or pumping), or weather (wave/wake and wind). While varying in levels of difficulty and required athleticism, Walk on Water Foil Sports is here to introduce you to the wonderful world of hydrofoiling and to help you meet your hydrofoil sports goals and potential.

Which Foil Sport Interests YOU?

ELECTRIC & GAS
POWERED FOILING

E-Foiling and Foil Assist

E-Foils or "electric foils" are propelled by an electric motor and a hefty battery and controlled by an electronic hand controller. They boast speeds near 30mph, and go for up to 30 miles and can run for 1 to 2 hours on a single charge. E-Foiling is probably the easiest way to begin foiling.

By means of powered watercraft, e.g., ski boat or jetski, foil boards without propulsion units may be towed with a rope as would a traditional water skier. In addition to boat power, Foil board riders may take advantage of boat wakes or natural waves which are created by the watercraft that is towing.

For those able to ride a hydrofoil using nothing more than the wake that forms behind a boat, there is wake thieving, which is like waterskiing behind a stranger's boat--or massive ocean going vessels--on the wake they leave behind.  Being a true victimless crime, wake piracy is not only done without a rope, but is generally done without invitation or permission.

MUSCLE & WAVE
POWERED FOILING

Peddle Foiling

For those enjoying a vigorous workout, riders of bike foil watercraft rely upon their personal leg strength in order to produce enough thrust by which to propel the foil through the water to generate lift, but where bicycle-style peddles are employed, electric motor assist systems are generally required as well for sustained runs.

Never envisioned in the days of Gidget's Beach Blanket Bingo, prone surf foiling is perhaps the greatest advancement in the history of traditional surfing. By adding a foil to the surfboard, surfing is made possible in much smaller swells, allowing for rides before wave breaks.  Skilled foil board riders can even perform tight U-turns and pump back out against the waves while looking for the best wave to ride back in.

Riding patches of endless rolling waves, generally with the assist of paddle, motor, or wind, "downwinders" run downwind, with waves matching wind direction. Downwinding might be compared to snowboarding down a mountain, where riders transition from wave to wave to keep the mountain from ever ending.

WIND
POWERED FOILING

Sailboat Foiling

Revolutionizing America's Cup and the sport of competitive sailboat racing since 2013, foil enhanced hulls have taken the sport of sailing to amazing speeds--reaching 40 to 50 knots (46 to 57 mph).  Smaller boats  (small catamarans and dinghies) are also made, helping to rejuvenate the sport of sailing!

Fitted with a mast, boom, and sail above the board, special sailboards or windsurfing boards can also be fitted with masts. Being the grand daddy of wind powered board sports, it is arguably the least practical ways to foil with the wind.

Reducing the amount of power required for kiteboarding, kiteboarders can improve their wind range and reduce their kite sizes by about 30% when using boards with foils in comparison to a traditional twin tip board.

Offering simplified gear (i.e., a simple inflatable airfoil "wing" or parawing) compared to windsurfing or kitesurfing (eliminating booms and masts or bars and lines), wing foiling now dominates wind foiling sports, incorporating wave riding and pumping.

E-Foiling Lessons & Services

E-FOIL LESSONS & GROUPS

For beginners with or without gear, WOW Foal Sports offers and recommends lessons for those that have never foiled before as it's the easiest way to pick up the sport of Hydrofoiling.  Standard rates for individuals and groups are outlined below.  Rates include board and safety equipment use.  Remember,  with WOW Foil Sports, lesson fees can be reappropriated to E-Foil board discounts!

E-FOIL TOURS & PARTIES

For riders with E-Foil experience and proficiency, WOW Foil Sports offers guided and exploratory E-Foil tours in more challenging and scenic waterways at different Illinois and Wisconsin lakes, including Lake Michigan.  In fact, WOW Foil Sports will usually make house calls, bringing all the gear needed to host parties at a lake of your choice or even at your own private beach!

E-FOIL BOARD DEMOS

Having a hard time knowing what gear you should buy?  Are you wondering what brand, what size board, what size mast, or what size or style of foil to get?  Well, with WOW Foil Sports you can TRY before you BUY.  For those buying E-Foils, free Waydoo and Lift demos are offered to those buying an E-Foil board from WOW Foil Sports.

Tow Foiling Lessons & Services

WING FOILING 101 - TOWS

What's harder than learning to wing foil?  Scheduling the wind... or, for that matter, waiting patiently for Midwest wind to blow!  But windy conditions does not guarantee that you'll have the weather to progress in your foil riding skills.  So why not get a head start and spare yourself the extra expense of beginner gear only to learn the hard way on, and instead book a WOW Foil Sports jetski foil board tow session and take days or even weeks off of your learning curve?  Rates for tow for introductory wingfoiling lessons are listed below:

WAKE FOILING 101 - TOWS

While wing foiling boards tend to be larger and higher in volume, WOW Foil Sports also offers jetski tow sessions with wake or prone surf foil boards to help advance your wake foiling, dock starts, beach starts, and, of course, wake thieving.   Introduction to wakeboarding

 SURF FOILING 102 - TOWS

While the principles of foiling are common to wing, wake, and prone foiling, foiling in Great Lakes surf is a bit more dicey and a lot more icy.  Obviously, Lake Michigan's temperatures and surface conditions aren't ideal for 101 level beginners, it does nevertheless offer many days of small swells that are lackluster for ordinary surfers but can be ideal for beginner prone foil surfers.   Because riding natural waves can be challenge enough, tow-in surfing can help riders get more acclimated to the sport before having to rely exclusively on belly (prone) board starts.

LAKE MICHIGAN TOW-IN & HAUL-OUT FOIL SURF SESSIONS

For beginners with or without foil gear, WOW Foil Sports offers wave Tow-in and Haul-out services for foil riders via jetski (i.e., 3 seat Seadoo) watercraft.  Couples sessions are recommended and group signups are also encouraged.  Maximum active / working group size is contingent upon conditions (e.g., water temperatures, wave and wind conditions, etc.), as well as rider skill level (prone start vs. powered rope to start).  Tow-out (transporting prone foil surfers to start in deep water away from shore break) can help prone foil surfers to enjoy more  time riding waves and less time less pumping, whereas Tow-in riders (can get aid in starting via rope and powered watercraft).  Haul-out services are also available for downwind foiling sessions and SUP foil riders.

SURF & WAKE FOIL TOW
